Thinking of upgrading your vessel’s engine? Hold that thought – just for a minute.
We recently had a client (let’s call him Sam) who bought a second-hand vessel and decided to repower it with a slightly bigger, better engine without checking in on stability or compliance requirements. What followed was a string of hiccups that could’ve easily been avoided with the right advice.
Sam’s not alone. Many vessel operators assume engine swaps are a simple mechanical job. But depending on what you’re installing, a change in power or weight can trigger stability assessments, documentation updates, and AMSA approval. That’s where early advice from a professional can make all the difference.
Here’s what Paul Howards, accredited Marine Surveyor at ADEC Kedge, recommends:
“If you’re planning a vessel engine change, we recommend seeking AMSA approval before purchasing anything.”
How To Stay Compliant During A Vessel Engine Upgrade

1) Speak To A Marine Surveyor Before Repowering
If you’re planning a like-for-like engine replacement, things are usually straightforward. But if you’re increasing engine size or weight, it may trigger new AMSA requirements. We advise checking first, before committing to the new engine.
2) Get A Professional Stability Assessment
If the new engine changes your vessel’s weight distribution or power, we’ll assess the implications. Stability calculations are often required to ensure the vessel remains safe and fit for commercial operations.
3) Complete the AMSA ‘Change Of Engine’ Form
Completing the ‘Notification of change of engine (form 1847)’ is a mandatory step when repowering a commercial vessel. Our team can help you fill out the AMSA documentation accurately to avoid delays.
4) Submit A Marine Surveyor’s Statement
For non-like-for-like changes, AMSA will require a declaration from an accredited Marine Surveyor stating that the engine upgrade does not compromise the vessel’s stability or structural safety. We provide this supporting documentation as part of our service.
5) Wait For AMSA Approval Before Purchasing The Engine
Once your application is reviewed and approved, you’re cleared to go ahead with the repowering. This prevents issues down the line if AMSA inspects the vessel.
